Consequences

Any exploration of the causes of cleavage must also deal with their consequences, particularly for the quality of democracy. The workshop seeks to understand how politics differs in polities where political conflicts revolve around deep-seated structures as opposed to polities where issues or personalities dominate. To what extent and in what way can elite-driven and structurally-anchored cleavages endanger (or enhance) the institutions of representative democracy?
